Why Now?

Addiction ruins lives and destroys families and communities.

This year deaths from alcohol and drugs in England rose again to their highest numbers since records began.

The harm caused by alcohol and drugs continues to worsen, while fewer people with an addiction are finding a pathway into treatment and recovery.

There are thriving recovery communities, innovative treatment services and health professionals with valuable expertise to offer.

Addiction Recovery Now believes that we must defeat the stigma associated with addiction, ensure treatment pathways are available to all and visible recovery communities thrive in every neighbourhood.

Shifting attitudes

The stigma associated with addiction and recovery is deeply entrenched. It stops so many people seeking the support they need.

Addiction is a complex, chronic mental health illness for which those suffering require care and compassion.

Every part of our society, including the places where we learn, work and socialise, has a role to play in overcoming our addiction crisis.

Shifting attitudes will also require change at the top – across the media, politics, industry, the criminal justice system, local government and health services.

Through sharing knowledge and developing understanding we can challenge the stigma and shame that surrounds addiction and, in the process, save lives.
